Two Waukegan Apartment Fires on the Same Day With Different Outcomes

WAUKEGAN, IL  – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a kitchen fire in a 3-story apartment building in Waukegan. When firefighters arrived, the fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

This apartment fire sprinkler save was in sharp contrast to a high-rise apartment fire later in the day where the Waukegan Fire Department responded to a fire on the 10^th floor of a 12-story building. An elderly man was found dead inside the unsprinklered unit. According to the Waukegan Fire Department, only the corridors and stairwells are protected with sprinklers, not the individual apartments. Both fires appeared to be the result of cooking.
