GIBSON CITY, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a fire in a second-floor apartment unit of a three story, 32-unit apartment building.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered smoke in the apartment and determined that the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. A 71-year old man was charged with aggravated arson for allegedly setting fire to his apartment. There were no reported injuries.

“We determined that the sprinkler system had (already) put the fire out, so we didn’t have to use any truck water or anything. The sprinkler system did its job,” said Fire Chief Bruce Kallal of the Gibson City Fire Protection District.
