LANSING, IL – A single fire sprinkler controlled a fire in a unit at a Red Roof Inn. Crews from the Lansing Fire Department arrived to find a fire that originated in the back of a small refrigerator and extended up a wall. Crews were able to extinguish the remaining fire. No injuries were reported.

According to Lansing Deputy Chief Randall Wright, the sprinkler system was installed in 2024 because of an updated Village ordinance that requires all hotels and motels to be retrofit with fire sprinklers. Wright said that despite extensive hoarding conditions in the unit, the sprinkler effectively held the fire in check until crews arrived. He said the incident highlights the direct life and property safety benefit of that ordinance.
