HAZEL CREST, IL – Fire sprinklers extinguished a fire at the Waterford Estates Retirement Community. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from a second-floor patio door and an employee who was calling for help from the balcony. According to fire officials, the fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system when crews arrived. The fire was contained to the one unit. Eight people were assessed for smoke inhalation and one was transported to the hospital for evaluation, the other seven declined additional treatment. The fire was determined as accidental. All residents were able to return to their units.
