Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Bedroom Apartment Fire

OTTAWA, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a bedroom fire in a second-floor apartment unit.  Crews arrived to find the fire sprinkler extinguished the fire. The origin of the fire was bedding material ignited by a candle.

The resident sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The Ottawa Fire department stated, “the importance of the sprinkler system in preventing a more severe incident cannot be overstated.  It unquestionably prevented a potential tragedy, ensuring the safety of both the apartment and its occupant.”

Fire Sprinklers Control Mechanical Room Fire at Drury Lane Theatre

OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL – A fire sprinkler kept a fire from spreading in a mechanical room at the Drury Lane Theatre.  Firefighters entered the building and found heavy smoke coming from the mechanical room on the second floor.  All employees evacuated safely from the theatre and no injuries were reported. The theatre was open the next day.

Single Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Oily Rag Fire at Restaurant

January 9, 2024

LAKE ZURICH, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a fire in a container filled with oily cleaning rags in a restaurant break room. Fire crews arrived to find a large plastic container with the rags on top of an unopened box of paper towels. The fire was extinguished.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal, John Wiecek, Lake Zurich Fire Department, the rags smoldered during the night until they ignited. The restaurant was closed and no one was in the building. The restaurant opened for business two days after the incident.

“The sprinkler activation saved this restaurant from becoming fully involved,” Wiecek said.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Apartment Cooking Fire

PEORIA, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a kitchen fire at the Providence Pointe Apartments. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from a unit on the first floor of a two-story, eight-unit building. The fire was caused by unattended cooking. No injuries were reported.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Assisted Living Facility Fire

HUNTLEY, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a fire in a single-story residential complex. A medical pendant alarm alerted the Huntley Fire Protection District of the fire. Crews arrived and found light smoke and the fire extinguished by a sprinkler. One person was transported to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Closet Fire in High-Rise Apartment

Skokie, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a closet fire in a 9th floor apartment unit of a 20-story high-rise building. The Skokie Fire Department was notified that there was smoke and fire on the 9th floor of the Optima Old Orchard Woods apartments. When they arrived on the scene, they confirmed that a single fire sprinkler extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes High-Rise Kitchen Fire

December 16, 2023
SCHAUMBURG, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a kitchen fire in a unit on the tenth floor of a high-rise apartment building.  When fire crews arrived, a fire sprinkler had already extinguished the fire caused by heated cooking oil that ignited.

According to Fire Marshal Michael Ron, Schaumburg Fire Department, “This is another instance where the sprinkler system that was retroactively installed in a multifamily high-rise building saved lives and property.”

No injuries were reported.

Fire Sprinkler Extinguishes Hotel Bathroom Fire

BURR RIDGE, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a bathroom fire in one of the guest rooms at the Extended Stay Suites hotel.  The fire was caused by a malfunctioning light fixture that spread to items on the sink counter.

Howard Hoffman, Inspector/Investigator, Tri-State Fire Protection District said it was fortunate that the bathroom in this hotel was protected with fire sprinklers.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Sprinkler Controls Fire at Multifamily Residence

November 29, 2023
NAPERVILLE, IL – A fire sprinkler controlled a fire on the second floor of a multifamily residence where most of the occupants have disabilities. When fire crews arrived at the scene, they encountered heavy smoke from a second-floor unit. Crews found an activated sprinkler in the unit that stopped the fire from spreading.  Twenty-nine residents were in the building at the time of the fire.

The fire is still under investigation and no injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
