This year’s recipient is Richard A. Ackley. As founder and current President of Dalmatian Fire, Inc., Rich expanded his Indianapolis-based fire sprinkler business he started in 1989 with offices in Cincinnati and later Columbus, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky.  Dalmatian Fire, Inc. is currently the largest independently owned Local 669 Union fire sprinkler company in the nation. Rich started his career working in a sprinkler fabrication shop in 1963 with Viking Sprinkler in Cincinnati, Ohio, while attending the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated with a BA in Economics in 1967. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Renee, who is likewise a UC graduate, Rich took his first office job in sales with Viking Sprinkler in Cincinnati in June of 1967.  He was appointed Branch Manager in Dayton, Ohio and later Akron, Ohio.  In 1971, Rich and Renee moved back to their hometown of Cincinnati to start a branch office for Grunau Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After being promoted to Senior Vice President in the fall of 1982, with four branches, Rich was made President of a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Grunau Fire Protection Systems with eight branch offices at the time. On May 1st, 1989, Rich ventured out on his own to start Dalmatian Fire, Inc., headquartered in Indianapolis with a branch office in Cincinnati, Ohio. After branch office expansions in Columbus, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky, and more than $550 million in fire sprinkler revenue, almost 24 years later, Dalmatian Fire, Inc., evolved into one of the most respected fire sprinkler contractors in the country. Rich has always given back to the industry being a near lifetime member of NFSA and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  He chaired the Southern Ohio Fire Sprinkler Association at the age of 23, chaired the Indiana Fire Sprinkler Association in 1993 – 1994, served seven years on the Local 669 JATC from 1992 – 1999, represented the sprinkler industry on the Top Notch Board in Indiana for a decade and has served on the Board of Directors of the NFSA for the last 12 years as Area 5 Director representing Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and West Virginia.  In addition to serving on numerous NFSA committees over the years, Rich currently serves on the NFSA Contractors Council, the Labor Advisory Committee, chairs the NFSA Membership Committee and has been involved with six Local 669 Negotiating Committees for collective bargaining purposes. Still passionate about the fire sprinkler industry nearly 50 years later, Rich still finds time to travel with his wife, Renee, while enjoying his hobbies of golf and wine collecting. Rich will be presented with the Golden Sprinkler Award during the opening session of this year’s NFSA Annual Seminar and North American Fire Sprinkler Expo on April 4th at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.  ]]>
