LIBERTYVILLE, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguishes a fire in an attached garage of a single-family home. Residents called the fire department after they discovered smoke in a back room of their garage. Libertyville has required all new construction homes to be protected with fire sprinklers since 2005. No injuries were reported and the homeowners were able to return to the home.

ROCKFORD, IL – Fire sprinklers helped control a fire in an electrical room in a 15-story senior living high-rise building. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire in the electrical room on the 9th floor. While the sprinklers helped control the fire and stop it from spreading, firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes. The building’s electrical system was damaged. As a result, residents were displaced due to loss of power in the residential units. No residents were injured, one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

TINLEY PARK, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished an unattended cooking fire in a second-floor unit of a 3-story senior living center. The fire started on the stove, then spread to the cabinet above when the sprinkler activated. Residents were evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival.
The resident who lived in the unit where the fire occurred suffered first degree burns and was transported to the hospital. All residents were able to return to their units. This is the third fire sprinkler save in this facility since November 2023.

LA GRANGE PARK, IL – A single fire sprinkler controlled a fire in a second-floor apartment at the Bethlehem Woods Retirement Village. Fire crews arrived to find smoke in the unit and a sprinkler controlling the fire. Crews used a hand-held water fire extinguisher to extinguish the remaining fire. The unit was unoccupied. There were no injuries reported and most of the tenants were allowed to remain living in their units.
The day before this save, the La Grange Park Fire Department completed hands-on fire sprinkler valve training, giving the fire crews the opportunity to use what they learned.
According to Fire Chief Dean J. Maggos, “This fire is a testament to the vital role fire sprinklers play in protecting lives and property, and in this case, our older adults.”

NORMAL, IL – Fire sprinklers stopped a fire in a semi-trailer from entering the Rivian EV Automotive Plant. The trailer was parked at the loading dock when it caught fire and the door to the dock was open. The trailer could not be moved away from the building because it was not attached to a truck. Fire sprinklers stopped the flames from spreading into the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

ITASCA, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a dryer fire in a unit at the Hamilton Lakes Apartment complex. A resident said they smelled something burning. When fire crews arrived, the fire was extinguished.
According to Lt. Brooks Nicewarner, Itasca Fire District, the sprinkler did the job and put the fire out in a multifamily building. There were no injuries to any occupants or fire personnel. All residents of the building were able to stay in the building. The sprinkler was replaced that night by the sprinkler contractor.

WHEELING, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a cooking fire in a first-floor unit of an apartment complex. When fire crews arrived, they found smoke in the first-floor hallway and confirmed that the sprinkler extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported.
According to Fire Prevention Manager, Robert Niemiec, Wheeling Fire Department said, “the resident went outside and left food cooking unattended on the stove. The fire occurred in a brand-new apartment complex. Without fire sprinklers in place the damage would have been much worse.”

SHOREWOOD, IL – Two fire sprinklers extinguished a fire that was intentionally set with an accelerant in a third floor hotel room. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy black smoke on the third floor, but the fire was extinguished.
According to Chief Paul Hertzmann, Troy Fire Protection District, it could have been a real disaster with injuries and death since the four-story building has 48 rooms. “Disaster was completely avoided because of the two sprinklers which prevented this fire from leaving the room of origin. They kept all the other occupants safe,” he said. No injuries were reported.

LAKE ZURICH, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a fire in a container filled with oily cleaning rags in a restaurant break room. Fire crews arrived to find a large plastic container with the rags on top of an unopened box of paper towels. The fire was extinguished.
According to Deputy Fire Marshal, John Wiecek, Lake Zurich Fire Department, the rags smoldered during the night until they ignited. The restaurant was closed and no one was in the building. The restaurant opened for business two days after the incident.
“The sprinkler activation saved this restaurant from becoming fully involved,” Wiecek said.

CANTON, IL – Fire sprinklers stopped a fire from spreading in an upstairs storage room of the Hy-Vee Grocery store. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames showing in the storage room. The fire department extinguished the fire within 12 minutes. All customers and employees were evacuated safely. No injuries were reported.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – Fire sprinklers extinguised a fire caused by a faulty propane tank at a buffet table in a restaurant serving Easter brunch. More than 500 people were in the restaurant at the time of the fire. Witnesses said the fire looked like a flamethrower with flames shooting toward the ceiling from the buffet table.
While sprinklers controlled the fire, staff safety helped evacuate the customers. Staff also used fire extinguishers. The fire was extinguished when firefighters arrived. One person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and three were treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics on scene.
The restaurant is expected to open for business in about a week.

WHEELING, IL – A single sprinkler extinguished a fire in an industrial building that was caused by an overheated stripping machine that shorted out the electricity and ignited a splash curtain.
A recent fire inspection noted the canopy of the stripping machine was blocking the building’s sprinklers and an additional sprinkler under the canopy was required. The owner complied.
According to a press release from the Wheeling Fire Department, the added sprinkler coverage under the canopy put the fire out. The loss of the contents of the building could have been catastrophic for the business, if there were not a working fire sprinkler system in place.
No injuries were report.

According to the Elk Grove Village Fire Department, when crews arrived there was no visible signs of smoke or fire. They discovered moderate water from a unit and found a sprinkler fully extinguished a stovetop fire. All occupants safely evacuated the building.
According to the Elk Grove Village Fire Department, fire sprinklers played a crucial role in preventing a potential total loss of the building and its contents. Since the fire was contained to a single unit, only the occupant(s) of that unit were displaced, leaving 79 of the buildings 80 units unaffected. No injuries were reported.

PALATINE, IL – A single sprinkler controlled a fire in a dumpster located in the garbage room of a 14-story condominium building. When crews from the Palatine Fire Department arrived, there was an audible sprinkler bell sounding. They found a dumpster fire in in check by a single sprinkler. The dumpster was safely wheeled out of the building where it was fully extinguished.
“The combination of fire sprinklers and fire separation kept the fire contained to the garbage dumpster, said Fire Marshal Jay Atherton, Palatine Fire Department. “This resulted in no loss from smoke and fire and no residents were displaced.”

ELMWOOD PARK, IL – Two fire sprinklers controlled an electrical equipment fire at Binny’s Liquor Store. An Elmwood Park fire truck arrived on the scene, while other emergency responders were delayed by a train. Firefighters found smoke coming from the storefront and the side of the building. Investigators determined the source of the fire was a computer cart that overheated while charging near the overhead receiving door in the back room.
“It was just an unfortunate accident but the positive part of it was that they had an automatic fire system,” said Kevin Flaherty, deputy fire chief, Elmwood Park Fire Department. “We got early notification and they had a sprinkler system. Two sprinkler heads, for the most part, contained and partially extinguished that fire.”
No injuries were report. The store remains closed for safety and security purposes and is expected to open near Memorial Day.

According to the Moline Fire Department, the fire was contained to the area of origin and extinguished by the sprinkler system before the fire department arrived. The fire was intentionally set with paper towels lit on top of a stove and the couch was set on fire. A suspect was arrested shortly after the fire. No injuries were reported.

TINLEY PARK, IL – A fire sprinkler extinguished a living room fire in a first-floor unit of the Hanover Place Senior Living facility before firefighters arrived. The fire was located at the base of a couch in the living room. The fire was contained to that area with the help of a sidewall fire sprinkler. Staff and residents safely evacuated the building. They were quickly cleared and allowed to return. One resident was slightly injured and was transported to a nearby hospital.
“Kudos to the sprinkler system for saving, obviously, the room plus many, many other lives that could have been in danger,” Tinley Park Fire Chief Steve Klotz said.

According to Fire Chief Mike Thomas fire sprinklers helped the crews responding to the fire.

ROCKFORD, IL – Fire sprinklers controlled multiple intentionally set fires at the Olesen Plaza residential high-rise building. When fire crews arrived, they found five separate fires on the third, sixth and eighth floors.
Authorities said the building’s surveillance system showed a suspect lighting the fires using a hair spray can and a lighter. The building is owned by the Rockford Housing Authority. No injuries were reported and damages were estimated at $10,000. The suspect is in custody.
In July 2022, a careless smoking fire in the same building was extinguished by the fire sprinkler system.

GURNEE, IL – A fire sprinkler located in the attic of a restaurant at Six Flags Great America stopped a fire from spreading. The fire was running up the outside walls and travelled into the eaves and attic activating the sprinkler. When crews arrived, they extinguished the remaining fire.
The park was closed at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

WAUCONDA, IL – A single fire sprinkler stopped a fire from spreading in the kitchen of a second floor unit in a senior living apartment building. When crews arrived, they found a sprinkler controlling the fire and were able to extinguish the remaining fire and safely evacuate residents. The cause of fire was unattended cooking,
“The importance of the sprinkler system in this case is vital as it did not allow the fire to grow in size and aided in the assistance of extinguishing the fire,” Wauconda Fire District Division Chief DaValle said.
The Wauconda Fire District would like to remind residents to not leave cooking unattended. Five people were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

DES PLAINES, IL – Two fire sprinklers held a car fire in check in an apartment garage until the fire department arrived.
According to Des Plaines Fire Chief Dan Anderson, two sprinklers activated over the vehicle. That set off the building’s audible alarms notifying the occupants.
“The fire alarm system and sprinkler system worked exactly as they were supposed to.” Anderson said. “The fire was confined to the vehicle preventing extension to the building or other vehicles. The bulk of the damage was to the vehicle itself.”
Two residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation and one requested transport. The vehicle was removed and building management worked to get the fire alarm and sprinkler system back into service. Occupants were able to return to their units two hours after the fire was reported.

According to Glen Ellyn Fire Chief Chris Clark, firefighters entered the building, made their way to the location of the fire and found two sprinklers extinguished a fire caused by a clothes dryer. No injuries were reported.
Glen Ellyn has required fire sprinklers in all new homes since 2002.

DEER PARK, IL – A single fire sprinkler extinguished a fire inside a two-car garage attached to a townhome. The fire started inside a garbage can that was inside the garage. The sprinkler extinguished the fire before crews arrived.
According to Fire Prevention Specialist Bob Kleinheinz, Lake Zurich Fire Department, the activation demonstrates the power of a single sprinkler. Water from the sprinkler covered a 20-foot area. An alarm woke the residents allowing them to safely evacuate. They were able to stay in the home after the crew determined it was safe. About five million dollars in damages was prevented thanks to the sprinkler. No injuries were reported.

SKOKIE, IL – A single fire sprinkler held a fire in check inside a large warehouse preventing a potential major fire until fire crews arrived. Exterior roofing work caused a fire that burned through the roof and into the bowstring truss area inside the structure, causing the fire sprinkler to activate and sound the fire alarm to provide early warning to occupants.
According to the Skokie Fire Department, without a fire sprinkler system, the fire would have likely spread rapidly throughout the bowstring truss roof, causing significant damage to the building and extremely hazardous conditions for the occupants and firefighters. It was estimated that fire sprinklers saved about $3,000,000 in damages. The business was able to remain open with minimum damage. No injuries were reported.
